How Well Do You Understand Your Own Products?

To best help your customers understand – and like – your product, you first need to understand all the ins and outs, strengths and weaknesses of the product yourself.

Marissa Mayer understands that. Rumor is that Yahoo will pick one device to spotlight its products, and Mayer wants all employees – not just those in R&D – to be intimately familiar with how their products work on that device. (Sounds like a great reason to me for every employee to get an iPhone.)

I’m not saying every CEO needs to start handing out iPhones, but they should demand that everyone in a company – from engineering to sales to customer service to marketing – understand the value prop of their products and services. This is an easy change that can lead to better customer service and a renewed sense of ownership in a company by its employees.
