Company Testing: Who Are You, Really?

When I graduated last spring and applied for my first job, I expected some tough questions: Why do you want to work here? Why should I hire you?

That was just the beginning. I got the job, and within my first week was ‘tested.’ This wasn’t typing, copy editing, or even reporting.  Nope. I got an 11-page “personality overview” from the DiSC assessment, like a Rorschach test without the pictures.

The assessment was a little scary. Because it was spookily accurate:

A Little Goes a Long Way – Especially Now

In these times, it’s really hard to think about charity, and donating. We’re worried about our jobs, what’s left of our 401Ks, and the complete uncertainty that’s not looking any better.

But when we scratch that surface, the next layer is very clear: All of us at this company have a lot to be thankful for, and much more than most people.

At Corporate Ink, we’ve always matched our staff’s charitable donations, to any charity they like. These are not big dollars, at least in philanthropic circles — $100 a person – but to the charity, it’s free money. This year, we’re raising it to $250. More >

Millennials: “I Need My Twitter!”

Accenture just issued a report that Millennials are using social media for work – constantly. And they expect their employers to provide what they consider core tools, including access to Twitter, FaceBook, LinkedIn, etc.  As you might expect, IT’s prohibitions don’t carry much weight; they just ignore the rules.

It’s an interesting take on where, and how, social media will take off first for business. With staffers doing business on Twitter et al, we can be pretty sure that prospects are, too – even if their bosses aren’t blessing it.

Millennials: who needs ‘em?

Yesterday’s WSJ carps about millennials and how they want more pay, more flexibility, more responsibility and don’t want to work hard. I don’t buy it.

The Journal puts these newbies at 7 to 28 years old. While none of our staff are in middle school, we’ve got a few who graduated college pretty recently. They’re great: smart, committed, hard workers – and ready to be challenged.

Yes, they want explanations. They crave new challenges. They want praise. So what?

They like to be asked for their opinion. Who doesn’t?

They like flextime. Who doesn’t?

Yeah, sometimes they cry. Ok – truthfully, More >
