How to Disturb a Multi-Billion Dollar Market in One Week
I (and maybe some of you) have witnessed a masterfully executed marketing and PR campaign that every business should note.
Dollar Shave Club, which has been around for less than a year, came out guns blazing last month, releasing a funny YouTube video that, I think, takes its cue from Old Spice’s famous “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” campaign.
CEO, Michael Dubin, speaks right to the camera, telling us exactly what his company is all about and why we should sign up. And it’s hilarious. I’d watch this video a few times over even if Dollar Shave Club wasn’t a real business.
But it is, and More >
“I’ve made a huge mistake.”
Ever send your media list … to your media list? Misspell an executive’s name in a press release? Send a sensitive email to the wrong client? Everyone in PR has had the ‘I’ve made a huge mistake’ moment. It’s almost inevitable.
Unlike most professions, PR pros face a lethal double-edged sword every day:
- PR is not a lot of people working on one big product, with endless revisions, quality control, tests, etc. It’s a few people working on many initiatives – releases, pitches, interviews, etc. – under extreme time-crunches.

Genius? Wrong? Obvious? Whatever your take, it worked, with audiences flocking to share the laugh online. Take a look at the screenshot below, which captures hashtag use for More >

The Emma Sullivan and Governor Brownback Incident: A Lesson in “Social” Engagement
When Kansas Governor Sam Brownback’s office contacted a state high school, apparently irate about student Emma Sullivan’s particularly critical Tweet, lots of lessons were learned about social media. But there’s one in particular that businesses should take note of: Don’t criticize the conversation – engage in it.
Trying to put an end to criticism in social outposts with pure might often encourages critics to use that same platform as a speaker box against you. Not surprisingly, the governor’s move backfired. Sullivan received a flurry of support, and ended up with five times as many More >
